On April 2, 2010, China’s largest social network, Renren.com, launched a donation campaign to support China’s drought-stricken southwestern region. In just a few hours, nearly four million users logged on to the donation page to show their support for the disaster area. The fundraising event will last 3 days. In the campaign, Renren.com pledges to donate a penny to the Red Cross Society of China for every user who participates in order to help the drought-stricken region.

To encourage more users to get involved, Renren.com launched special a drought-resistance virtual gift, which provides another way to contribute to the cause. Users who participate in the event will receive five coupons from Renren.com and have a chance to win seven days of free VIP status. Renren.com promises that there is no limit to total contributions; every time a new user participates, Renren.com will donate one more cent. Sociologists say Renren.com can harness the power of a social network to encourage people to express their compassion.
